EFCC arrests former Plateau assembly speaker and 14 other ex-lawmakers for alleged money laundering

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested a former Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Moses Thomas Sule, along with 14 other former lawmakers. They were taken into custody in Makurdi on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

Those arrested include Gwottson Fom, Sani Abubakar, Jwe Philip Gwom, Thomas Dantong, Happiness Mathew Akawu, Cornelius Dotyok, and Agbalak Ibrahim. The rest are Danjuma Azi, Fwangje Bala Ndat, Salome Tanimu Wanglet, Namba Rimuyat, Nimchak Rims, Ishaku Maren, and Paul Datugun.

The arrests followed public complaints accusing the former lawmakers of breaking the Money Laundering Act of 2022. They were also said to have abused the rules on government contracts.

Investigations showed that although the lawmakers were in office for only six months, they received several luxury vehicles from the state government. These cars were meant for official use and were worth around ₦2.5 billion. However, after leaving office, they didn’t return the cars as required, and efforts to recover them failed.

Because the old cars couldn’t be recovered, the government had to spend another ₦2 billion to buy new vehicles for the current lawmakers.

The EFCC has confirmed that the former Speaker and his colleagues will soon be taken to court to face charges.
