“I lost 20 family members in one day” – Benue resident says

A heartbreaking story has come from Benue State where a man, Michael Ajah, shared how he lost 20 of his family members in just one day.

In a chat with News Central, a distraught Ajah said;

‘’My family members died in this house, eleven of them. Some d!ed in the other store, eight of them. My whole family members that died on that very day were 20. That is my own family members. I am not talking about any other thing.”

The tragic event happened during a violent attack by suspected terrorists and bandits in the Yelewata area last weekend.

Michael said the attackers destroyed everything he had. His house and shop were burnt to the ground during the raid.

In a video interview, he said the shirt he was wearing was the only thing he had left. Everything else he owned was lost in the attack.

This is another painful reminder of the ongoing violence in Benue State and how innocent lives continue to suffer.

Recounting how the sad incident happened Ajah said;

‘’On that very day, rain started in the evening. I was sleeping. Around 10.20pm, we heard gunshots,. Before we could notice what happened, Fulani herdsmen entered this place”

When asked how sure he is that the assailants were Fulani herdsmen, Ajah said;

‘’I was hearing them clearly. Not that someone told me.I was inside that room and they surrounded that room. I escaped narrowly, My brothers got burnt in this house.”

Over 100 people were massacred in the incident.
