Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has said that buildings and properties blocking waterways in Benin City will be demolished to help stop the flooding problem.
He explained that only those with proper government documents for their buildings will get compensation. Others will be moved to safer areas.
According to the Governor, both private and commercial buildings in the Government Reservation Areas (GRAs) built along drainage paths will be removed to make space for new drainage systems.
He shared this plan during a recent update in Benin City. He also mentioned that a team of experts in environment and water management has been hired to study the flooding issue in the city.
These experts, from four different companies, will carry out detailed studies on the land and drainage systems. Their goal is to find a lasting and sustainable solution to Benin City’s regular flooding problems.
The Governor said the flood control work will start after the rainy season. He added that the government is following successful flood management examples from Akwa Ibom and Rivers States.
He explained that the rainy season is a good time for the experts to see the actual impact of the floods. This will help them plan better.
The study will focus on the land type, existing drainage systems, and areas where flooding happens often.
The Governor promised to study the experts’ findings carefully before taking action.
He stressed that there will be no room for corruption or waste. Every fund set aside for the project will be used properly to protect people’s lives, properties, and the environment.
The goal is to make Benin City safer, cleaner, and a better place to live and do business. He said this flood control work is part of a bigger plan to modernize Edo State.
According to him, the days of floods disrupting lives and communities in Edo State are almost over.
Governor Okpebholo also said his government is serious about creating a safer future where residents no longer worry each time it rains.
Finally, he promised that this plan is not just for show or politics—it will be based on facts and a real desire to protect the people of Edo State.
