Benue Assembly lifts suspension of six lawmakers

The Benue State House of Assembly has now allowed six lawmakers who were earlier suspended to return to their legislative duties.

The decision came after the six lawmakers submitted a letter appealing for forgiveness and apologizing to the House for their previous actions.

The lawmakers who were allowed back are Hon. Simon Gabo, Hon. Elias Audu, Hon. Solomon Gyila, Hon. William Ortyom, Hon. Blessed Onah, and Hon. Anyor Mato.

These legislators were among a group of thirteen who had earlier been suspended because they did not support the removal of the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Maurice Ikpambese.

At the time, the suspended members said the Chief Judge’s removal was against the law and went against the idea of separation of powers and the right to a fair hearing.

During the plenary session held on Tuesday, the Assembly agreed, through a voice vote, that the other seven suspended lawmakers will only be welcomed back if they also submit a formal appeal to the House.
