A sad incident happened in Yelewata, Benue State, on Friday night when suspected herdsmen attacked the community at about 10:00 pm. The violent attack led to the loss of many lives, and several others were left injured.
Early on Saturday, reports came in saying that at least 16 people had been injured in the attack. The exact number of those killed is not yet known as the authorities are still collecting information from the scene.
When a distress call was made, the Nigerian Army and officers from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) went to respond. Sadly, they were attacked by the assailants in Daudu, a nearby area, before they could reach the village.
This ambush led to the unfortunate death of two soldiers and one officer from the NSCDC. A member of the community expressed sorrow, saying these security men gave their lives for the safety of others and their sacrifice would always be remembered.
Those who survived the attack are now getting medical help at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital in Makurdi. Doctors and nurses have asked people to donate blood as soon as possible to help save the injured.
Residents and aid groups have been asked to come forward with urgent help—especially blood and medical support—to assist the victims of the attack.
One local who was deeply affected by the tragedy shared sympathy with the families of those who died, especially the security officers. The person also said they avoided posting disturbing pictures online out of respect for those affected.
