Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has reacted to recent comments made by President Bola Tinubu about the issues facing Nigeria’s opposition parties, especially the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
During the Democracy Day event held at the National Assembly on June 12, President Tinubu spoke about the divisions within opposition parties. He said it was “a pleasure” watching them struggle and clearly stated that he had no plans to assist them in resolving their problems.
President Tinubu also dismissed claims that his government was trying to force Nigeria into becoming a one-party state. This comes after several politicians from opposition parties defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), sparking such concerns.
In response, Saraki admitted that the PDP is indeed facing some internal problems. However, he stressed the need for party members and supporters to step up and work together to rebuild. He shared his thoughts with reporters after the Democracy Day celebration.
Saraki also noted that Tinubu made it clear he supports a democratic system with multiple parties. According to him, this should reassure everyone that there is still space for opposition politics in Nigeria.
He added that this is the reason the PDP is reaching out to its members and encouraging unity. Saraki said there’s no need for anyone to feel pressured because, as the president has said, he won’t help the opposition. It’s up to the PDP to organize itself and come back stronger.
