Liverpool Football Club is set to welcome a new star. The Premier League champions have agreed to sign talented German midfielder Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. The deal could rise to an incredible £116 million, making it one of the most expensive transfers in British football.
At first, Leverkusen rejected Liverpool’s first two offers. The German side had asked for £126 million, but both clubs finally agreed on £100 million upfront, plus a possible £16 million in extra payments.
These extra payments, known as add-ons, will only be paid if Liverpool reaches certain goals or performs very well with Wirtz in the team.
If all the conditions for the bonus payments are met, this transfer will become the highest ever in British football, breaking all previous records.
The current top transfer in British football is Chelsea’s £107 million deal for Enzo Fernandez, which happened in 2023 when he moved from Benfica.
Chelsea also spent £100 million to get Moises Caicedo from Brighton. His deal might grow to £115 million if performance targets are met – still slightly less than what Liverpool might pay for Wirtz.
Even though it might not be a British record just yet, this deal is now Liverpool’s most expensive signing ever in the club’s history.
Liverpool had to fight hard to sign Wirtz. Big teams like Bayern Munich, Manchester City, and Real Madrid were also trying to get him, but Liverpool won the race.
Wirtz will be the second player Liverpool brings in this summer. The first was his former teammate from Leverkusen, Jeremie Frimpong. Liverpool’s new manager, Arne Slot, is also interested in signing Milos Kerkez, a left-back from Bournemouth.
