A terrible tragedy has happened in Ahmedabad, India, as a passenger plane crashed shortly after takeoff, killing many people both on the plane and on the ground.
The Air India flight was heading to London but crashed into a hostel used by medical students and doctors. Photos from the crash site show the plane’s tail sticking out of the building.
Police confirmed that the deaths include not just the people on the plane but also others in the hostel building.
The airline said there were 242 people on board the flight. Out of those, 241 people died, and only one passenger survived the crash.
The impact was so bad that it also took lives on the ground. The building the plane hit was full of doctors and students at the time.
According to a senior police officer, 269 dead bodies had already been brought to the Civil Lines hospital in Ahmedabad by late Thursday, June 12.
Another top police official said they were still trying to confirm the exact number of people who died in the building hit by the aircraft.
One woman named Ramila told reporters that her son, a student at the medical college, had gone to the hostel to eat lunch when the plane crashed.
She said her son survived by jumping out of a window from the second floor. Although he was injured, she was able to talk to him.
The only person who survived on the plane was sitting near an emergency exit, in seat 11A, according to police. There is a chance that more survivors are being treated in hospitals.
A man named Ramesh Viswashkumar, who was sitting in seat 11A, told a newspaper that the crash happened just 30 seconds after takeoff.
From his hospital bed, Ramesh said everything happened so fast that he barely had time to react.
He said when he woke up, he saw dead bodies all around him. Scared and confused, he ran from the crash site until someone helped him into an ambulance.
Ramesh was traveling with his brother, Ajay, who was sitting in a different part of the plane. He said he cannot find his brother and asked for help in locating him.
Ahmedabad’s police chief said that the final death toll may include both people who were on the plane and those who were inside the hostel. Sadly, one of the victims was Vijay Rupani, the former Chief Minister of Gujarat State.
