Democracy Day: President Tinubu Addresses The National Assembly (Live Update)

President Bola Tinubu went to the National Assembly for a joint meeting with both the Senate and the House of Representatives.

He entered the House of Representatives chamber at exactly 11:50 in the morning.

Tinubu is expected to speak to the lawmakers and then give his Democracy Day message.

Earlier today, the planned 7 a.m. Democracy Day broadcast was cancelled. This was because Tinubu chose to speak directly at the National Assembly instead.

The committee organizing the Democracy Day event had already shared the schedule. According to a statement from Abdulhakeem Adeoye, who spoke for the information and public relations department, there would be no parade this year.

Tinubu was joined by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Femi Gbajabiamila (his Chief of Staff), some ministers, and a number of governors as he entered the chamber.

The president is also expected to give national awards to a few lawmakers during the session.

Before 2018, Nigeria celebrated Democracy Day on May 29. But in June 2018, former President Muhammadu Buhari changed it to June 12 to honour MKO Abiola, who won the 1993 presidential election.

In his welcome speech, Senate President Godswill Akpabio spoke about how important it is for the executive and legislature to work together. He said this teamwork is very important for Nigeria’s progress.
