Nigeria has lost a respected legal mind. Mohammed Lawal Uwais, who served as the Chief Justice of Nigeria, has passed away.
Uwais died at the age of 89. He was born on June 12, 1936, in Zaria, Kaduna State. He was Chief Justice from 1995 until 2006.
During his time as Chief Justice, he earned respect for working hard to improve Nigeria’s judicial system. He also fought to keep the courts independent from outside influence.
His family announced his passing in a brief message. They said, “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihir Rajiun. With heavy hearts but grateful to Allah, we share the news of the loss of our beloved father, Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais.”
The family also said his funeral will take place today after the Friday prayers at the National Mosque in Abuja.
Justice Uwais’s legacy in Nigeria’s legal system will be remembered for years to come.
