During his recent trip to Nigeria, billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates was honoured by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu with one of the country’s highest awards.
A short ceremony was held at the President’s private home in Lagos on Tuesday evening. At the event, President Tinubu presented Gates with the national title of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR). Gates is the co-founder of Microsoft and the head of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
The announcement of this special recognition was made by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s adviser on information and strategy. He shared the news on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.
The award was given to appreciate Bill Gates’ strong support for health care, development, and the fight against poverty in Nigeria. His foundation has been active in the country for many years, supporting vaccination programs and public health campaigns.
For nearly two decades, the Gates Foundation has worked with Nigeria on important projects like ending polio, boosting farming, and improving the health system.
The CFR award is one of the top national honours in Nigeria. It is usually given to individuals who have made a big impact on the nation’s progress and development.
