AEDC electricity customers get N28.99bn monthly subsidy – NERC

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has shared that customers under the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) are currently receiving electricity subsidies worth N28.99 billion every month.

This update was included in NERC’s Multi-Year Tariff Order for AEDC, which was issued in May 2025.

According to NERC, the government has kept electricity tariffs steady for customers in Bands B to E by continuing the subsidy that began in 2022.

As a result, people who fall under these categories (Bands B to E) are paying less than N209 per kilowatt-hour for their electricity.

NERC explained in its report that “based on the federal government’s plan to support electricity costs, the rates for customers in Bands B to E will remain the same as they were in December 2022. These rates will only change if there’s a new government decision. This approach gives AEDC customers an estimated N28.99 billion in subsidies every month in 2025.”

In the same May 2025 order, NERC added that it has approved N1.69 billion from AEDC’s yearly operating budget. This amount represents 10% of what AEDC overcharged customers between May and September 2023.

In 2024, AEDC announced 107 Band A power feeders, where customers pay N209 per kilowatt-hour. However, DAILY POST has reported that most AEDC customers have now been upgraded to Band A.
