In 2025, Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems, and Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the head of the World Trade Organization (WTO), were honored as part of the ‘100 Most Notable Peace Icons in Africa.’ This prestigious list celebrates Africans from many fields who have worked hard to promote peace and progress on the continent.
The announcement was made at a special news conference in Abuja, where the organizers revealed the names of many well-known figures from Nigeria and other African countries. Alongside Tems and Okonjo-Iweala, Egyptian football star Mohamed Salah of Liverpool FC was also recognized.
Others on the list include Nigerian businessman Femi Oyetola, Tanzanian CEO Dr. Angel Josephat Natianota, and Moroccan doctors Abdelhak Najib and Imane Kendili. Zimbabwe’s Minister of Finance, Prof. Mthuli Ncube, and Rwanda’s Karame Group CEO Munyakazi Sadate were also honored.
According to Ambassador Kingsley Amafibe, the project director for the Peace Icons initiative, the awardees were chosen for their strong commitment to causes that support development and peace. He explained that these individuals come from different backgrounds but share a passion for using their talents and influence to help build a more peaceful Africa.
“They were selected because of their dedication to humanitarian work, their positive impact on communities, and their efforts to empower young people,” Amafibe said. He added that the project aims to celebrate people who play key roles in bringing unity, harmony, and progress to the continent.
The 2025 Peace Icons will receive their awards at the ‘100 Most Notable Africans Leadership and Business Summit’ set to take place in July in Kigali, Rwanda. This event will focus on leadership, business growth, investment, and sustainable development in Africa. It will bring together government officials, entrepreneurs, economic experts, and policymakers to discuss important topics and build partnerships.
Amafibe noted that Africa currently faces many economic challenges, making it important for stakeholders to have open conversations and work together. He said the summit will provide a platform to explore new opportunities, strengthen communication among leaders, and encourage cross-border cooperation in sectors like agriculture, education, and health.
By sharing their stories and successes, the 100 Most Notable Peace Icons hope to inspire others to join efforts in creating a more peaceful, prosperous Africa. Through teamwork, resilience, and strong leadership, these icons are leaving lasting legacies that reflect the best values of the continent.
