Mauritania’s Sidi Tah takes over from Nigeria’s Akinwunmi Adesina as AfDB’s 9th president

Sidi Ould Tah, a native of Mauritania, has been chosen as the new leader of the African Development Bank Group (AfDB). He becomes the ninth person to take on this important role.

His election was decided by the AfDB’s Board of Governors. This group is made up of finance ministers and central bank leaders from 81 countries that are part of the bank. The competition for the position was strong.

The Board of Governors is the most powerful body within the African Development Bank and is responsible for major decisions that guide the bank’s future.

Sidi Ould Tah will officially take office on September 1, 2025. His term will last for five years. He will replace Dr. Akinwumi Adesina from Nigeria, who is finishing his second term as president.

Tah won the election by receiving the most votes, beating four other candidates. The other people who ran for the position included Amadou Hott from Senegal, Samuel Munzele Maombo from Zambia, Mahamat Abbas Tolli of Chad, and South Africa’s Bajabulile Swazi Tshabalala.
