Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has revealed that his team had a hard time getting into the game during their Europa Conference League final match against Real Betis.
Maresca admitted that his players didn’t start the match the right way and lacked the right mindset in the first half.
He said the team was still caught up in the excitement from their 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest just a few days earlier.
That win secured Chelsea a spot in next season’s Champions League, and the players were still celebrating that achievement.
During the final against Betis, Chelsea fell behind early in the first half when Isco passed to Abde Ezzalzouli, who scored for the Spanish side.
However, Chelsea came back strong in the second half and scored four goals to seal a big win.
Speaking to TNT Sports, Maresca said, “In the first half, we approached the game in the wrong way.”
He explained that he wasn’t too surprised because the mood in the team was too joyful after their last match.
“We struggled a little bit because of that, but we improved a lot in the second half,” Maresca said.
He also shared what he told the players after the Nottingham Forest game: “If we want to be an important team, we can’t just be happy with what we’ve done. We needed to go out and win the final.”
