Lere Olayinka, the media aide to Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), revealed how much the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) owes the FCT Authority in unpaid ground rent.
According to Olayinka, Wadata Plaza, which is the building that houses the PDP National Secretariat in Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, owes the FCT Authority more than N7.6 million in ground rent.
He explained on social media that this amount has built up because the PDP has not paid its ground rent for 28 years.
Olayinka also questioned why the PDP, despite making a lot of money from selling nomination forms, has not been able to pay this long-standing debt.
He shared that he personally paid N2.7 million for his PDP nomination form for the House of Representatives in 2022. In his area, three candidates each paid N2.7 million, making a total of N8.1 million, which is more than the PDP owes in rent.
On Monday, officials from the FCT Authority took action by sealing the PDP Secretariat building because the ground rent was not paid.
In a related move, on March 18, 2025, the FCT Authority canceled the land titles of 4,794 properties in several districts of Abuja. These properties were among thousands that had not paid ground rent for 43 years.
The building where the PDP National Secretariat is located is one of the properties whose land title was canceled.
