Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, has asked her lawyers to start preparing her defence against the criminal charges brought by the Nigerian federal government.
According to Daily Post, the charges were filed by the Attorney General of the Federation, Prince Lateef Fagbemi. The government claims Natasha made false statements about a plan to kill her.
The case is based on something she said during a live interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on April 3, 2025. In that interview, Natasha said there was a plan to assassinate her.
She pointed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, accusing them of being behind the alleged plot.
On Saturday, her lawyer, Dr. Ehiogie West-Idahosa, confirmed that he had received the court documents related to the case.
He said the legal team got the papers on Friday, May 23, 2025, at the High Court in Abuja. The charges include three points, mostly claiming Natasha said things that could harm the reputation of Senate President Akpabio.
The lawyer explained that they received the documents with a letter of authority signed by Natasha. He added that the legal team is now preparing all the facts and legal arguments needed for her defence, which they will present in court when the trial begins.
