The Vatican has a way of making everyone feel calm and serious. I remember feeling surprised during my last visit at the funeral mass of Pope Francis. That day, President Donald Trump entered St. Peter’s Basilica and was shown to his seat in the square.
Many important people wanted to greet him, which made the place crowded and noisy. But then, a serious priest came up to them and said firmly, “Excuse me, this is St. Peter’s Basilica, not the White House. Please take your seats.” He wanted to keep the event respectful and peaceful.
For the installation of Pope Leo XIV, the Nigerian team led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu arrived early. This gave them plenty of time to greet each other calmly.
When we got there, I saw former Governors Peter Obi and Kayode Fayemi already seated. I went to say hello after the President was seated.
Both governors came with me to greet President Tinubu. He welcomed them warmly and even joked a little before they went back to their seats.
At St. Peter’s Square, no one gets special treatment. Everyone sits under the hot sun. Many people faint from the heat and have to be taken out on stretchers.
A man sitting in front of me fainted during the mass. Luckily, Seyi Tinubu quickly got a bottle of water from inside, which helped revive the man until the paramedics arrived.
President Tinubu stayed for the entire three-hour mass, watching all the rites except Communion under the burning sun. Afterward, he spoke and took selfies with many Nigerian priests and seminarians.
I can’t forget to mention his well-made, sharp suit. It caught many eyes as he confidently walked to meet the new Pope.
Vatican 2025 was a deep and special experience for everyone who was there.
