Manchester United is going through a tough time financially after a poor season in the Premier League. The club is expected to lose around £80 million because they won’t be part of any European competition next season.
They had a chance to qualify for the Champions League by winning the Europa League final. That could have brought in £70 million. But things didn’t go their way.
In the final, they lost 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao. Brennan Johnson scored the only goal in the first half, sealing United’s fate.
With that defeat, Manchester United will not be playing in any European tournaments next season. That means less money from UEFA and fewer big games.
This season, the team made £30 million from Europa League TV money. Since they’re not in Europe next season, they won’t get that income anymore.
Their earnings from home games at Old Trafford are also expected to drop by about £20 million. That’s because they’ll probably have around five fewer games.
To make matters worse, their deal with Adidas includes a penalty clause. Because they didn’t qualify for the Champions League, the club will lose another £10 million during the 2025-26 season.
United also finished 16th in the Premier League. That’s much lower than last season when they came eighth. Because of this, they will receive about £22.4 million less in prize money and TV rights.
This season has been one of Manchester United’s most disappointing – both on the pitch and financially.
