On May 21, 2025, Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), went to the National Assembly to explain and defend the FCT’s 2025 budget of ₦1.78 trillion.
He said most of the money—about 72%—will be used for building and improving projects around the FCT. The rest, about 28%, will cover running costs like salaries and office expenses.
Wike shared details about big projects in the budget. For example, ₦80 billion will go to SUKUK loan projects, ₦25 billion to the Abuja Light Rail, and ₦15 billion for improving water supply in Abuja. Another ₦250 billion will come from loans to finish projects already started in the city and nearby towns. The remaining money will help complete other ongoing projects that support the local economy.
The budget also sets aside money for important government agencies like the Federal Capital Development Authority and the Satellite Towns Development Department to help finish existing projects and start a few new ones.
Wike stressed that the 2025 budget focuses on completing key road and infrastructure projects. These include work on roads B6, B12, Arterial Road N20, and others. There will also be upgrades to expressways, highways, and bus terminals to make transportation better.
For running costs, about ₦150 billion is planned for paying government workers, and ₦344 billion will cover other administrative expenses.
Different sectors get specific amounts: roads and public buildings will receive ₦383.5 billion, transportation ₦79.3 billion, education ₦181 billion, and health ₦54 billion.
Other areas like the environment, water, agriculture, social development, legal services, land administration, and local councils also have money allocated for their work.
Wike explained how the FCT plans to make money in 2025. The revenue will come from the Federal Government’s share, internally generated revenue, and other sources, totaling about ₦1.78 trillion.
He promised that the government will work hard to finish many projects started by earlier administrations. Wike thanked the National Assembly for quickly reviewing the budget and asked them to approve it soon.
He also invited lawmakers to a series of events from June 10, 2025, to celebrate completed projects and mark President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second year in office.
National Assembly leaders praised Wike’s work and the FCT’s progress. They said the budget is one of the best so far and promised to keep supporting the FCT government.
Other senators also applauded Wike’s efforts to improve the lives of people living in Abuja and its surrounding areas.
