A wave of sorrow has spread across Awka, Anambra State, after the sudden death of Reverend Father Anthony Udogu. He was a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Awka and was loved by many for his service and devotion.
Fr Udogu collapsed while playing lawn tennis at St Patrick’s Cathedral. It was a shocking and unexpected event that happened during a regular game.
The incident took place in the early morning hours. According to a statement by Rev Fr Charles Ndubuisi, the Diocesan Chancellor, Fr Udogu was rushed to the hospital immediately, but doctors were unable to revive him.
The Diocese said in their message, “With faith in the resurrection of the Lord, we announce the passing of our dear brother, Rev Fr Anthony Udogu, who died this morning.”
Before his passing, Fr Udogu served as the Parish Priest at St Francis of Assisi Church in Awka. He also held the position of Dean for Awka Deanery II. Many admired him for his faith, leadership, and the care he showed to his church members.
The Diocese has expressed deep condolences to his family, the church members he served, and the larger Catholic community. Burial arrangements are being made, and more updates will be shared soon.
The Diocese ended the announcement with a prayer: “May the soul of Rev Fr Anthony Nnaemeka Udogu rest in the bosom of the Lord.” Since the news broke, both clergy and lay people have been sharing heartfelt tributes in his memory.
