Kano gov signs N16bn Jakara dam irrigation project into law

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has approved a large irrigation project at Jakara Dam worth ₦16 billion. According to officials, this development is expected to greatly improve farming activities across the state.

The signing happened during the 28th Executive Council Meeting. Two new laws were passed: the Water Users Association Establishment Law, 2025, and a change to the WRECA Law. The update allows the government to appoint a Deputy Managing Director for the Water Resources Engineering and Construction Agency.

The new Water Users Association Law gives the state the power to build, manage, and maintain irrigation systems. This directly supports the new Jakara Dam project.

The Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, said that the new law now makes it possible to start construction of a big irrigation system at the dam. The project will provide water for 1,500 hectares of farmland.

Commissioner for Water Resources, Haruna Doguwa, said the law allows Kano State to access ₦16 billion in funding. He noted that many farmers in places like Minjibir, Gabasawa, and Gezawa will benefit from the irrigation.

He also said that the government will open a special account and deposit ₦5 billion to support farmers who grow crops during the dry season. This move is meant to improve food supply and support the local economy.

The commissioner added that the project will help create jobs, increase food production, and boost income for many people in the state.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf continues to focus on agriculture and infrastructure as the main goals of his development plan for Kano State
