Inter Miami lost 3-0 at home to Orlando City in a Major League Soccer match, and Lionel Messi was not happy with how the referee handled the game. Messi said the referee did not know an important rule about passing the ball back to the goalkeeper.
One of the goals in the game happened because of a back-pass, which caused problems for Inter Miami. This mistake helped Orlando City score during the match on Sunday.
Luis Muriel scored the first goal for Orlando City just two minutes before the first half ended.
In the second half, Marco Palasic scored the second goal eight minutes after the break. Then, in added time, Dagur Dan Porhallsson scored the third goal to finish the game.
One of Orlando City’s goals started when one of their players passed the ball back to his own goalkeeper.
Messi said in an interview with Apple TV+ that Orlando City mostly played by sending long balls forward.
He also described a strange moment when a player passed the ball back to the goalkeeper.
Messi said the referee told him that he didn’t understand the back-pass rule, which led to a goal coming from a long ball after that.
Even though Messi was unhappy with the referee’s decisions, he didn’t use them as an excuse for Inter Miami’s loss.
He said that mistakes by referees happen, but he thinks Major League Soccer should look closely at how referees manage games and work to improve their performance.
