How I survived assassination, military offered me governorship without election – Atiku

At the American University of Nigeria’s (AUN) 2025 graduation ceremony, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar shared a powerful story from his life. He spoke about a time in Kaduna State when his life was in danger. During the incident, Atiku said he hid his wife and children inside a wardrobe while he stepped out to face the attackers. Though they fired shots at him, they missed. Instead of running, he confronted them and asked why they had fired. He told the students that true courage means standing firm, even in dangerous situations.

Atiku also talked about how he refused a political offer from the military during Nigeria’s years under dictatorship. He was offered the position of governor without having to contest in an election, but he turned it down. According to him, leadership should be earned through a democratic process, not handed out by force. His patience and principles eventually paid off when he became Vice President of Nigeria in 1999 through an election.

He encouraged the graduates by saying that patience doesn’t mean weakness—it’s a strength. Atiku explained that throughout his life, he has faced threats and challenges, but he remained strong and focused. He reminded the students that they, too, should stand for what is right and never take shortcuts.

Atiku also spoke about the influence of his mentor, the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua. He admired Yar’Adua’s courage, especially during his time in prison. Even when facing the possibility of execution, Yar’Adua stayed calm and fearless. Atiku described this as the kind of bravery every leader should have.

By sharing his story, Atiku wanted to teach the graduating students that true success comes from patience, courage, and standing for what is right. He urged them to be bold in difficult times and always choose integrity over convenience.
