The Federal Ministry of Education has said that the news about BEA scholars returning to Nigerian universities is false. It made it clear that no such plan or committee exists.
In an official statement on Saturday, May 17, 2025, the Ministry said the press release titled “BEA: Education Minister receives committee’s report” is not true. The statement was signed by Boriowo Folasade, who is the Director of Press and Public Relations. The report had claimed that the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, received a report from a special committee, but the Ministry said this never happened.
The Ministry strongly stated that no committee has been formed, and there is no plan to bring BEA scholars back to Nigerian universities. People are advised to ignore such false news.
The government had already announced on May 7, 2025, that the BEA Scholarship Programme was officially cancelled.
According to the Ministry, the programme ended after a full policy review. The aim is to improve and strengthen Nigeria’s own university system instead of sending students abroad.
It also said that the courses students used to study abroad under the BEA programme are now available in Nigeria. In fact, many of them are offered with better quality in Nigerian universities and polytechnics.
Although the programme has ended, current BEA scholars who are already studying abroad will continue to receive full support. This includes school fees, monthly payments, and other approved benefits until they finish their studies.
The Ministry also advised the public and media to only trust official announcements made through its verified communication channels.
