Electoral Act: Reps move to make voting compulsory for all Nigerians

A new bill is being discussed in Nigeria’s House of Representatives that could make it compulsory for all eligible Nigerians to vote. This bill would change the current Electoral Act of 2022.

The bill passed its second reading in the House and is supported by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and Daniel Ago. It was presented during a session on Thursday.

Daniel Ago explained that the purpose of the bill is to get more people to vote. He said that making voting mandatory could help solve the problem of low voter turnout in the country.

However, not all lawmakers agree. Mark Esset, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party from Akwa Ibom State, raised concerns about the bill.

Esset said that forcing people to vote is not enough to improve the election system. He believes the current system is weak and needs to be fixed first.

He also pointed out that many Nigerians don’t vote because they don’t trust the system. He added that before making voting compulsory, it’s important to ensure that people believe their votes truly matter.
