There was confusion on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, when officials from the Imo State Government brought a bulldozer and demolished the Orlu District office of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC).
According to reports, workers at the EEDC office were not allowed to remove any of their personal or office items. Security personnel who came with the officials used force to stop them.
It was reported that the Chairman of Orlu Local Government Area, Hon. Chris Mbaeri, was present during the demolition.
Mr. Emeka Ezeh, who is the Head of Corporate Communications at EEDC, said the government gave no reason for tearing down the office.
He explained that around 8:30 AM, a bulldozer sent by the Imo State Government entered the EEDC premises from the back and started bringing down buildings.
The bulldozer destroyed important parts of the office, including the store, the cash office, and the security house.
Ezeh also mentioned that staff members were not allowed to enter the building to save any equipment or company property.
He said the whole incident was very troubling because there was no notice, and no one told EEDC why their office was being demolished.
When the District Business Manager and another staff member tried to stop the action and ask questions, they were attacked and taken to Owerri by a special police group known as “Tiger Base.”
Ezeh said the company is still in shock and doesn’t know why their office was targeted in such a manner.
EEDC is now asking the Imo State Government to explain why an office building they have used for more than 20 years was destroyed without warning.
