During the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the Nigerian government submitted the death certificate of Ahmed Gulak as evidence in court.
Ahmed Gulak was once a Special Adviser on Political Affairs to former President Goodluck Jonathan. He was reportedly killed in 2021 by suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the second witness for the government, identified as BBB, presented the death certificate to the court. This happened in front of Justice James Omotosho at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The government lawyer, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, guided the witness.
When the hearing continued, Awomolo told the court that even though the session was meant for cross-examination, he wanted to ask the witness a quick question.
He requested, “We ask for a permission to ask a question, my lord.”
Kanu’s lawyer, Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, did not oppose the request, so the judge allowed Awomolo to continue.
Awomolo asked the witness to confirm that in his earlier statement, he said Nnamdi Kanu made a radio broadcast asking people to stay at home, which later led to the killing of Gulak.
The witness confirmed this. He also said he took part in the investigation of Gulak’s death.
He told the court that he had a certified copy of Gulak’s death certificate, issued by the police on July 18, 2021.
The witness added that the document was an official medical report confirming Gulak’s death.
When Kanu’s lawyer was shown the certificate, he had no objections. Justice Omotosho accepted it as evidence and marked it as “Exhibit PWJ.”
Awomolo then asked the court for permission to allow the witness to read the certificate aloud.
The witness, BBB, read the death certificate. It was issued by the Nigeria Police in Owerri, Imo State. It confirmed that Gulak was allegedly shot by suspected IPOB members in 2021.
After this, Kanu’s lawyer began his cross-examination of the witness.
