Lagos Govt unveils monthly, quarterly rent payment plans

The Lagos State Government is making a big move to help people pay their rent more easily. They are planning to allow monthly and quarterly rent payments, which will be helpful for many, especially those who earn low incomes.

This new plan was shared by the Housing Commissioner, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, during a press briefing in 2025. The event was held to mark the second year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s current time in office.

According to the commissioner, this new rent idea is part of the government’s goal to make housing more affordable and easy to access. He also spoke about an earlier program, the rent-to-own scheme, where people can pay just five percent of the house cost first and spread the rest of the payment over ten years.

He said that many people liked the rent-to-own program, and because of that success, the government is now looking for more ways to make rent easier to pay.

One big reason for this new plan is that paying a whole year’s rent at once is hard for many people. With the new system, tenants can pay their rent monthly or every three months. This will make it less stressful for people who struggle to find a large amount of money all at once.

The government is also working closely with landlords, property developers, and other important people in the housing sector. They want to make sure any problems, like how to keep track of payments and make sure everyone follows the rules, are fixed before the new system starts.

Even though there are still some things to sort out, talks are ongoing. The commissioner said they are listening to everyone and working to find the best solutions.

A pilot test of this rent payment plan will start soon in selected areas of Lagos. This trial will help the government see how well the plan works before expanding it to the whole state.

“This is not just something written on paper,” the commissioner said. “We are serious about this. We know it will help many families, and we are ready to make it happen.”
