The sentencing of Murja Ibrahimi Kunya, a popular TikTok personality, has been postponed by the Federal High Court in Kano. The court decided to move the date to May 20 after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) requested to make changes to the charges against her at the last minute.
Murja is currently on trial for allegedly misusing the Nigerian naira. This stems from a viral video in which she was seen spraying and dancing on N400,000 during a party in Kano in December 2024. She has already pleaded guilty to the charge.
The court hearing, which was initially set for judgment and sentencing, took an unexpected turn. The EFCC’s lawyer, Musa Isa, asked the court to allow changes to the charge. Murja’s defense lawyer, Abubakar Saka, opposed this request. He argued that introducing a new charge at this point could cause delays and deny his client a fair trial. He also said the defense team needed more time to review the proposed changes.
Despite the defense’s objections, Justice Simon Amobeda allowed the changes to be made, ruling that it was necessary for justice. The judge then set the new hearing date for May 20.
While waiting for the next hearing, Murja will remain with her lawyer under her current bail conditions, which include a guarantee that she will appear in court.
