The management of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) in Kano has decided to shut down two privately owned female hostels due to reports of immoral activities. The two hostels, Al-Ansar Indabo and Hotoro, are located near the university campus and had previously been approved by the school for off-campus housing.
In an official statement, Dr. Hamza Garba, the Vice President of Campus Life, explained that the closure came after reports about immoral behavior, lack of essential services like water and electricity, student violence, and unauthorized late-night movements. As a result, students were instructed to leave the hostels right after their final exams for the fall semester. The university also emphasized that it would not take responsibility for any problems caused by failing to comply with the order and that they are working with local security agencies to enforce the closure.
Some people believe that the reason for the hostel shutdown might be more about poor facilities than the moral issues.
The affected hostels housed about 500 female students, many of whom came from outside Kano. According to reports, plans are in place to move these students to new hostels that are closer to the campus. One of the new hostels is named after a former student who passed away.
At the moment, MAAUN does not have on-campus dormitories and relies on private companies to provide housing for its students.
