President Trump calls for 30-day Russia-Ukraine ceasefire, warns of more sanctions

President Donald Trump has called for a 30-day unconditional ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, warning that the United States would impose further sanctions if the ceasefire is not respected. This proposal aims to bring both countries to the negotiating table and ease the ongoing conflict.

Ukraine has expressed its willingness to accept the U.S. proposal for a 30-day ceasefire. However, Russia has only suggested a much shorter, three-day ceasefire, which is intended to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two.

In a post on social media, Trump made it clear that if the ceasefire is violated, the U.S. and its allies will impose more sanctions on both countries. He emphasized that both sides must respect the ceasefire and hold each other accountable for the peace process.

Trump stated that the ceasefire should eventually lead to a broader peace agreement, which he believes can be achieved quickly. He also mentioned he would be available at any time to help facilitate negotiations if needed.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Ukraine is ready to begin the 30-day ceasefire immediately. He stressed that Russia must show its willingness to end the war by agreeing to an unconditional ceasefire.

Ukraine’s foreign minister pointed out that Russia had already violated its own proposed three-day ceasefire hours after it began. Russia, on the other hand, claimed that Ukraine continued fighting, dismissing the initiative as ineffective.

Trump initially began negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin in February, hoping to end the war quickly if he were re-elected. However, he has grown frustrated with the lack of progress from both sides as the fighting continues.

Top U.S. officials have hinted that if progress isn’t made soon, the United States might reconsider its role as a mediator in the conflict. The situation remains uncertain, and time will tell if the ceasefire leads to lasting peace.
