NNL fines Jigawa Golden Stars ₦2 million over referee assault incident

The Nigeria National League (NNL) has imposed a fine of ₦2 million on Jigawa Golden Stars Football Club due to an alleged incident where club officials assaulted a referee during a match.

On May 3, 2025, after a game between Jigawa Golden Stars and Barau FC at the Kazaure Township Stadium, reports surfaced claiming that officials from Jigawa Golden Stars physically attacked the center referee after the final whistle. Eyewitnesses reported that the referee was injured in the attack.

Following an investigation, the NNL Disciplinary Committee announced the sanctions on May 8, 2025. Jigawa Golden Stars was fined ₦1 million for not providing adequate security during and after the match. They were also fined an additional ₦1 million for the physical assault on the referee.

Furthermore, the committee ordered the Jigawa State Football Association and the club to identify the individuals responsible for the assault and submit their names within seven days.

Meanwhile, Barau FC was fined ₦500,000 for failing to keep their supporters within the designated stands during the match.

Dalason Danlami Alanana, the NNL Chief Operating Officer, confirmed that the fines were issued under the league’s summary jurisdiction. Both clubs now have 48 hours to either accept the decision or appeal it to the Nigeria Football Federation’s Disciplinary Committee.
