Funke Awolowo, the granddaughter of the late Nigerian political icon Obafemi Awolowo, has officially resigned from her role in the Lagos State Labour Party Executive Committee. This move marks a significant departure from her active political involvement in the party.
Before stepping down, Awolowo served as the Head of the Mobilisation and Integration Team in Lagos. In this role, she was responsible for coordinating efforts to expand and strengthen the party’s reach in the region.
In a resignation letter, Awolowo revealed that recent developments within the party made it increasingly difficult for her to continue her work in good conscience. She stated that the integrity of the committee was being compromised, which negatively affected her personal reputation.
Awolowo’s resignation was formalized through a letter addressed to Dayo Ekong, the Chairman of the Lagos State Labour Party. In the letter, she explained that the committee’s integrity was being undermined, which led to actions that conflicted with her core values. She also mentioned that this situation was harming her name and associating her with decisions she did not supported.
Despite stepping down from her position, Awolowo made it clear that she remains dedicated to public service and the political process. She emphasized that her decision was not a rejection of political engagement but a response to the current state of affairs within the party.
Her resignation came four months after she called on various political groups, including Afenifere, Obidients, and others, to unite for a common cause in building a New Nigeria. Awolowo’s departure from the Labour Party marks the end of a chapter, but her commitment to the larger political vision remains strong.
