Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) manager Luis Enrique couldn’t help but make a joke after his team beat Arsenal to reach the UEFA Champions League final. He made fun of the way people often call Ligue 1 the “farmers’ league” — a nickname used to suggest that French football is not competitive.
PSG reached the Champions League final after a strong performance against Arsenal. They won the semi-final with a 3-1 score over two legs. Now, they will face Inter Milan in the final.
This season, PSG has been dominant against Premier League clubs. They have knocked out four English teams: Manchester City, Liverpool, Aston Villa, and now Arsenal. It’s a big achievement and proves how strong the French team has become in European football.
After the match, Enrique spoke to TNT Sports and joked, “The league of farmers, no? We are the league of farmers.” His comment was clearly aimed at critics who look down on Ligue 1. He added that the team is happy with how people are now recognizing their style of play and strong mindset.
Luis Enrique praised Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, calling him a great friend. However, he disagreed with the idea that Arsenal deserved to win. “They played how they like to play, but we scored more goals, and that’s what counts,” Enrique said. “It was a tough game, but we earned our spot in the final.”
PSG already won the French league title last month. Now, they have a chance to win all three major trophies this season. First, they will face Reims in the Coupe de France final on May 24. Then, they will play Inter Milan in the Champions League final a week later in Munich.
