Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has shared his opinion about the Champions League semi-final between Inter Milan and Barcelona. He believes the referee made a wrong decision that hurt Barcelona’s chances in the match, which ended 4-3 in favor of Inter.
Barcelona had a tough start but managed to turn things around and take the lead at San Siro. It looked like they were heading to the final after a strong comeback.
Lautaro Martinez scored the opening goal for Inter with a well-built play. Later, he earned a penalty which Hakan Calhanoglu converted to put Inter ahead.
The penalty was given after a VAR check. The referee believed Pau Cubarsi fouled Martinez as he tried to stop him from scoring. At first, the referee didn’t see it as a foul, but changed his mind after watching the replay.
Speaking on beIN Sports, Wenger said he didn’t agree with the call. He felt the defender got the ball first and that using slow-motion replay changed how the play looked.
“At full speed, it’s a clean tackle. He’s first on the ball,” Wenger explained.
“Lautaro leans into him to win the penalty. He knows he can’t score, so he tries to draw contact.”
Wenger believes the referee made the wrong choice and the defender Cubarsi didn’t deserve to be penalized.
Barcelona’s Raphinha scored in the 87th minute to give his team a 3-2 lead on the night and a 6-5 lead overall. But Inter’s Francesco Acerbi equalized with a late volley, sending the match to extra time.
In extra time, Davide Frattesi scored the winning goal that sent Inter Milan to the final.
