The Edo State Police Command has successfully arrested 95 suspected gang members during targeted operations in Benin City and surrounding areas. These raids, conducted over the past week, were part of efforts to reduce gang violence and cult-related activities in the state.
In a press release shared on Friday, CSP Moses Joel Yamu, the Police Public Relations Officer, announced the arrest. Alongside the suspects, officers also confiscated two locally-made pistols, a single-barrel shotgun, and 24 live cartridges, demonstrating the severity of the threat posed by these groups.
The arrested individuals are said to belong to dangerous confraternities, including the Maphites, Eiye, and Aye. These groups have been linked to violent cult supremacy clashes that have claimed innocent lives in Edo State.
CP Monday Agbonika, the Edo State Commissioner of Police, called on parents and guardians to play a more active role in curbing cultism by keeping an eye on their children’s activities. He further advised youths to steer clear of unlawful societies, warning that involvement could lead to tragic outcomes.
Out of the 95 suspects, 64 have already been charged to court and remanded in custody. Investigations are ongoing for the remaining individuals to ensure justice is served.
The police have reiterated their commitment to making Edo State safe and free from cult-related violence. Residents are encouraged to cooperate with security agencies to report suspicious activities.
By staying informed and vigilant, the community can work together to end the menace of cultism in Edo State.
