A deadly bomb explosion in Fangak County, South Sudan, has killed at least seven people and injured twenty others. The explosion also caused significant damage, destroying a hospital and a pharmacy.
The incident took place in Old Fangak, located in the Greater Upper Nile region. A bomb was dropped on the pharmacy, setting it on fire and damaging the nearby Old Fangak Hospital. This hospital was the only healthcare facility in the area, which serves over 110,000 people, many of whom already have very limited access to medical care.
Doctors Without Borders (MSF), a medical charity, reported the attack on Saturday. They shared that the explosion has had a major impact on the community’s healthcare services. However, it is unclear who was behind the attack or their reasons for carrying it out. The South Sudan government and army have not commented on the incident yet.
South Sudan has been at peace since a 2018 agreement ended a five-year civil war. However, recent tensions, including the March arrest of opposition leader Riek Machar, have raised concerns about the possibility of new conflicts.
