Famous Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has spoken out about the reactions to her recent announcement that she had twin sons through surrogacy.
In an interview on With Chude Live with media personality Chude Jidonwo, Chimamanda explained why she shared the news about how her sons were born.
Some people criticized surrogacy, saying it is wrong to “rent” a woman’s body. In response, Chimamanda said that while surrogacy can be misused, there is a proper and respectful way to do it.
She also pointed out the double standard in society — people say women have the right to do what they want with their bodies but still judge them for using surrogacy.
Chimamanda shared, “My boys are so precious to me. I didn’t want anything about them to become political. At one point, I wished I hadn’t said anything, but I also didn’t want to lie.”
She hopes her honesty will help other women feel more confident about choosing different paths to motherhood. “Our society judges too much,” she said. “That’s not good for anyone.”
She ended by saying, “My daughter and my babies are the greatest gift I’ve ever received. I have ZERO regrets.”
