Nigerians react to trending video of Alaafin of Oyo refusing to stand up to greet the Ooni of Ife at an event

A video from a recent event in Ibadan has caused a lot of online discussion. The event was hosted by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Tuesday, April 29.

The clip shows the moment the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, arrived at the venue. As he walked to the front, he greeted other traditional rulers. The Soun of Ogbomosho stood up to shake hands with the Ooni. Another king nearby also stood up to greet him.

But when the Ooni reached the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, the Alaafin did not stand up. Instead, he stayed seated and stretched out his hand for a handshake.

This moment has gotten mixed reactions online. Some people believe it’s a sign of a power struggle between the two kings. Others say the Alaafin has the right not to stand for anyone, while a few feel it would have been respectful to stand since the Ooni was already standing.

The video has brought back the conversation about respect and tradition among Yoruba kings.
