The political tension in Rivers State may soon calm down, as Governor Sim Fubara has made a bold move to make peace with his former ally and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Governor Fubara met with Wike at his home in Abuja. He was not alone—he came with Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State, and former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba.
Sources said Fubara walked straight into Wike’s living room like someone familiar with the place. There, he reportedly begged Wike to reconcile with him.
A reliable source confirmed that the meeting happened, but said it was unclear whether it would lead to the end of the political crisis in Rivers State.
Fubara and Wike had a fallout shortly after Fubara became governor in 2023. Their disagreement became a big political issue. The situation got worse when Niger Delta militants threatened to attack oil facilities in the state.
President Bola Tinubu reacted by declaring a state of emergency in Rivers State. He suspended Governor Fubara, his deputy, and all members of the state House of Assembly for six months. He also appointed a Sole Administrator to take charge of the state.
Wike later said he actually wanted Fubara removed from office completely, but President Tinubu stepped in and chose suspension instead.
Fubara’s visit to Wike, which came after his meeting with President Tinubu in London, is a strong sign that he wants peace. Now, the people of Rivers State are watching to see if this move will bring lasting calm to the state.
