Bode George, a former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), says the recent wave of defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State will not affect the PDP in the 2027 elections.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, George said the defections are not new in Nigerian politics and are not a threat to the PDP.
Recently, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his deputy Monday Onyeme, and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, along with other top PDP members, joined the APC. This move raised questions about the PDP’s future in the state.
However, Bode George dismissed these fears. He said, “Nothing has changed. The people of Delta know the benefits they got under the PDP. APC has not brought anything better.”
He also questioned the reasons behind the defections. “People are angry in the country. Those moving to the APC are likely doing it for personal gain,” he said.
George believes many of those who left the PDP will eventually return. He said the APC is already filled with people who have their own political plans and may not welcome newcomers easily.
He reminded viewers that defections have happened in the past, especially during important events like party conventions, but the PDP still survived.
When asked if endorsements of President Bola Tinubu by some PDP governors could break the party, George said the situation is only temporary and not the end of the PDP.
