A high-ranking official in Chicago’s Housing Authority caused a big stir during an important meeting after making a surprising and inappropriate comment.
Francine Washington, who has been part of the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) Board of Commissioners since 2014, reportedly told others at the meeting that she needed to “get laid.” The statement shocked those present and led to a formal investigation by the Office of the Inspector General.
According to the investigation, Washington made sexually graphic remarks in front of other employees. She later said her comments were influenced by frustration over how an attorney was treating a union representative, which she described as an example of “white privilege.”
After the incident, CHA’s Interim Board Chair Matthew Brewer spoke with Washington, and she promised not to repeat such behavior. However, she says she doesn’t remember much of the conversation and believes she was reported by someone in human resources who was annoyed by her frequent questions about the agency.
Washington defended herself, saying, “I love being a public housing resident and I love my residents. I would never do anything to harm them or the authority.”
In addition to her role on the CHA board, Washington also leads the Central Advisory Council and Washington Park Local Advisory Committee. She is known for being active in her community and sits on several important boards.
The report from the investigation also revealed that the CHA currently has no sexual harassment policy. It recommended that one be created to prevent similar incidents in the future.
