I’ll work against Atiku if he runs again – Fayose

Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, has strongly rejected efforts to form a political group that wants to remove President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election. Speaking on Channels TV’s Politics Today on April 18, Fayose said the idea, led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, is a waste of time and has no real support.

Recently, some opposition leaders have been meeting to discuss forming a united group to challenge the ruling APC. Atiku, who was the PDP’s presidential candidate in 2023, is leading these efforts. He wants politicians from different parties to work together against Tinubu. However, this plan doesn’t seem to be getting much support—even from people in Atiku’s own party, the PDP.

Earlier this week, PDP governors said they are not planning to join any political coalition, making it clear they don’t support Atiku’s idea. Fayose said this shows that the proposed alliance doesn’t have a strong base.

“The coalition was already dead from the start,” Fayose said. “Tell me one respected Nigerian who has supported it. The PDP governors’ statement in Ibadan clearly says: ‘We are not with Atiku, and we’re not going anywhere.’ This coalition is just a dream with no real backing.”

Fayose also said that some opposition governors actually prefer Tinubu’s leadership over Atiku’s. He believes the PDP first needs to fix its own problems before talking about forming any coalitions. He blamed the party’s internal issues on the decision to let a northerner run for president again, breaking the party’s usual power-sharing system called zoning.

“I openly worked against Atiku before, and I’ll do it again if he runs,” Fayose said. “It’s time we learn from our mistakes. After eight years of a northerner, it should be the turn of a southerner—whether from the East, South-West, or South-South.”

Fayose said the PDP needs to respect its zoning agreement if it wants to become strong again. He believes ignoring this agreement is what led to the party’s troubles.
