Nigerian rapper Eedris Abdulkareem has said that his latest song, Tell Your Papa, is not meant to attack Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking during an interview on Channels TV’s Rubbin’ Minds, Abdulkareem said the song was a response to a statement Seyi Tinubu made, calling his father the best president Nigeria has ever had. This statement was made in March 2025 while Seyi was in Yola, Adamawa State.
According to the artist, the song is a way of telling Seyi to ask his father, the president, to fix the problems facing the country. These include poor electricity supply, lack of jobs, insecurity, and a weak economy.
“Nigerian youths are only asking for basic things: electricity, safety, a good economy, and jobs – not palliatives,” he said.
He also explained that if Seyi hadn’t made that statement, he wouldn’t have made the song. “I was inspired by what he said. I’m not attacking him personally,” Abdulkareem added.
After the song’s release, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) banned it from being played on radio and TV, calling it inappropriate.
This action led to criticism from many Nigerians, including Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka. Soyinka said banning the song feels like censorship and is a threat to freedom of speech.
Abdulkareem also mentioned that even after 24 years, his old song Nigeria Jagajaga is still relevant because the country has not seen real progress.
