Rivers emergency rule: Stop interpreting laws with political partisanship — AGF Fagbemi tells Nigerians

Nigeria’s Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, has called on Nigerians to stop looking at legal issues through political views.

He spoke in Lagos during the launch of a book titled “Tribulations and Trophies: Bola Ajibola… in His Own Words!” This book is about the life of the late Bola Ajibola, who was a former Attorney-General and judge at the International Court of Justice.

“People should read carefully and familiarize themselves with what the law says,” he said. “It’s not a matter of sentiment or emotions but of basic facts on the ground. Although I serve in government, I have avoided taking sides. The courts are examining this matter, and we must allow them to decide.”

Fagbemi said that court cases and legal issues should be handled using facts and laws—not based on political feelings or party support.

His comments come after President Bola Tinubu announced a six-month emergency rule in Rivers State on March 18 due to ongoing political problems.

The decision removed Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all members of the state assembly from their positions. A retired Navy Chief, Ibok-Ete Ibas, was appointed as the sole administrator of the state.
