UCL: Nothing special about your free-kick goal – Sneijder, Van Bronckhorst tell Declan Rice

Former football stars Wesley Sneijder and Giovanni van Bronckhorst believe Declan Rice’s free-kick goal against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League was nothing special.

Sneijder, who used to play for Real Madrid, said on Ziggo Sports that Rice’s first goal was easy for any right-footed player. He pointed out that Real Madrid made a mistake when they didn’t set up their defensive wall properly.

Sneijder said goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois thought Bukayo Saka, a left-footed player, would take the kick. Because of this, Courtois moved the wall more to the right, which gave Rice a clear angle to shoot.

“That wall wasn’t in the right place,” Sneijder said. “Courtois expected Saka to take the kick, so he adjusted the wall for a left-footed shot. But for a right-footed player like Rice, that made it easy.”

Van Bronckhorst, a former Arsenal defender, agreed with Sneijder. He said, “Wesley is right. The wall was too far to one side. That made it simple for Rice to score.”

Declan Rice scored two goals in the second half of the match, and Mikel Merino added another. Arsenal beat Real Madrid at the Emirates Stadium. The second leg of the quarterfinal will be played next Wednesday at the Santiago Bernabeu.
