Amotekun rescues 28 Ghanaians in Ondo

In a major rescue operation, Amotekun, Ondo State’s security force, saved 28 Ghanaians who were held hostage by kidnappers in the Oda area of Akure, the state capital.

The victims had been tricked by a 28-man gang that promised them U.S. visas for a fee of $1,500 to $2,000. Once the victims arrived in Nigeria, they were captured and forced to help recruit more victims.

In another operation, Amotekun also recovered ₦210,000 from kidnappers who had abducted a family of four and demanded a ransom of ₦10 million.

Adetunji Adeleye, the Commander of Amotekun, spoke at a press conference where 61 suspects were paraded for crimes including kidnapping and cultism. He warned young people to be careful when seeking opportunities abroad, as the gang had tricked many others into paying for fake visa services.

The gang’s operation involved contacting people from foreign countries, promising assistance with U.S. or Canadian visas, and charging hefty fees. Once the victims arrived in Lagos, they were taken to Akure, where their money was taken, and they were held until they could recruit others.

Adeleye urged young people to explore legal opportunities, such as agriculture, in Nigeria instead of falling for scams. He also reassured residents that security in the state was a priority for the government.

Furthermore, Adeleye warned illegal settlers in Ondo’s forest reserves that they must seek government approval to be there. The government is also cracking down on criminal activities, including those disguised as business ventures.

The Ondo State Government has also introduced measures to curb crime, including a ban on commercial motorcycles (Okadas) from operating after 8 p.m., as many criminals use them for illegal activities. There is also a crackdown on unregistered vehicles, with a deadline set for vehicle owners to regularize their documents.

With these actions, the government and Amotekun are working hard to make Ondo State safer for everyone.
