Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has shown his commitment to both justice and compassion by supporting a bail variation for a nursing mother involved in a pensions fraud case.
During a visit from Hon. Chinedu Ogah and members of the House of Representatives Committee on Reformatory Institutions, Governor Otti explained that the pregnant woman was initially given temporary release to safely deliver her baby.
The intervention came after his wife, First Lady Priscilla Chidinma Otti, secured her release from the correctional facility. Following her release, the woman was taken to a hospital where she gave birth safely.
The governor has now directed the Attorney General of Abia State to push for a change in her bail conditions to allow her legal release. He emphasized that his administration believes in balancing justice with rehabilitation.
“We must be both compassionate and firm. Serious criminals must be kept away from society, but those who have been corrected deserve a second chance,” Otti stated.
Hon. Ogah praised the governor for his efforts in improving correctional facilities, including installing water and solar electricity. He also urged the government to repair the road leading to the 3,000-capacity Correctional Centre in Uzuakoli, which is the largest in the South East.
Governor Otti reaffirmed his commitment to rebuilding Abia and improving governance while following the examples set by past visionary leaders.
