Veteran Nollywood actor Patrick Doyle has raised concerns about the real estate industry in Nigeria. He believes it has become a major way for people to launder illegal money.
In a recent interview on Echo Room with Quincy Jones, Doyle pointed out that many estates in Abuja and Lekki have fully built but unoccupied houses. He questioned why people keep constructing new buildings when they remain empty.
According to Doyle, real estate is now one of the top ways for individuals to clean illegal money. He finds it surprising that while Nigeria faces a housing shortage, many buildings remain unused. He believes people use stolen money to invest in real estate, hoping to sell later.
He even mentioned a case where a single person allegedly owns around 7,000 apartments in Abuja. Doyle argued that people prefer investing in buildings rather than keeping cash at home, where it could be lost or damaged.
His claims have sparked discussions about the role of real estate in financial crimes and the need for stricter regulations.
